Coming Home

Distance makes the heart grow fonder, or does it?

We’re supposed to have faith and trust in a God we can’t see. Sometimes we can’t even feel Him, yet we’re supposed to believe. Sometimes, it feels like we displeased God and He left us out to dry and wither in misery. But fortunately, the reason we can’t feel him isn’t because He stopped loving us. I heard a story once, and here it is.

Once upon a time there was an old couple driving down the dusty country road in their rusty blue pickup truck. The wife, sitting in the passenger seat with her shoulder-length silver hair, looked over at her husband-his hands on the wheel- and said,
“Gee, remember when we were ‘young and in love’? I miss those days. Remember when we used to stick this armrest up? And I used to sit right next to you and you’d rest your arm around my shoulders and you’d kiss me? I miss those days.”
Hearing this, the husband looked over at his wife. With a great smile on his face he said,
“I never moved.”

Isn’t this a perfect description of the way God treats us? And also the way we treat God sometimes? When we’re stuck in a rut, we look up to the sky, recall how pleasant our life used to be, and ask “Where are you now?” or “How could a loving God treat me like this?” Ah-ah-ah… The real question is, how could you treat someone who’s done everything for you the way that you do? God is always willing to take you back, you just have to make the first move. His love can mend every part of a broken heart. His passion can fill every part of a dull life. His blessing can fall on those who follow his desires.

Psalm 139:23-24
Investigate my life, O God,
Find out everything about me;
Cross-examine and test me,
Get a clear picture of what I’m about;
See for yourself whether I’ve done anything wrong-
Then guide me on the road to eternal life.
